The
Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation is the fund-raising auxiliary of the Arkansas Game and Fish
Commission. The foundation was created in 1982 through the efforts
of former AGFC director Steve N. Wilson.
Steve Smith has been with the foundation
over 13 years and was named President in 1998. Smith and the
foundation played key roles in the successful 1996 campaign to pass a
conservation sales tax to provide permanent and solid funding for the
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Arkansas State Parks, Arkansas
Heritage Commission and Keep Arkansas Beautiful. About
three-fourths of the funds raised for the campaign were by the Arkansas
Game and Fish Foundation.
Smith has guided foundation projects in
other areas as well. The purchase of the Robinwood tract on the White
River as an addition to Wattensaw Wildlife Management Area, he played a
leading role in the acquisition and development of the Potlatch
Conservation Education Center at Cook's Lake, the purchase of a 421-acre
tract on Crooked Creek being developed as the Fred Berry Conservation
Education Center and the planned development of a conservation education
center on a 211-acre donated tract in Southwest Little Rock at Otter
Creek.
